Quick Start
This page is a concise first-time path from unboxing to a configured node. For deep dives, use the guides linked in each section.
Before you begin
Hardware sold by LowMesh ships with Meshtastic® firmware already installed. In most cases you can skip flashing, power on, and go straight to the Meshtastic mobile app and Device setup. Flashing is optional—use it when you want to update Meshtastic®, switch to MeshCore™, or recover a device.
You should have:
- A compatible radio (check Devices or your vendor’s specs).
- A phone or tablet with the right app—Meshtastic® for stock LowMesh hardware.
- For optional flashing only: a data-capable USB cable and a desktop with Chrome or Edge (Web Serial for the flasher).
Meshtastic® and MeshCore™ are different firmware stacks. If you reflash, run one primary firmware per device unless you fully understand how to switch and recover.
Step 1 – Confirm your platform
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| New LowMesh device (default) | Stay on Meshtastic®—no flash required to get started. |
| Largest community, broad hardware | Meshtastic® – see Meshtastic Firmware |
| MeshCore / Ripple features | MeshCore™ – requires flashing; see MeshCore Firmware |
| Ad-hoc nets (fluid membership, events, lots of change) | Meshtastic® is usually the better fit |
| Stable infrastructure (fixed repeaters, long-lived roles, little churn) | MeshCore™ is often a better fit |
Rule of thumb: Meshtastic® is strong when the network shape and membership change often; MeshCore™ is strong when you can plan infrastructure and it stays put. Hardware and vendor guidance still matter—see Introduction for the full comparison.
Step 2 – Power on, pair, and configure (typical path)
- Power the device (USB or battery per your board).
- Open the Meshtastic mobile app (stock firmware).
- Pair over Bluetooth and set region, node name, and channels—see Device setup and Radio & mesh concepts.
- Verify with a second node or test message when ready.
Step 3 – Optional: flash or update firmware
Only if you need a different Meshtastic® build, MeshCore™, or recovery:
- Open the Web flasher.
- Select Meshtastic or MeshCore.
- Choose your device model and a firmware build (stable is recommended for first flash, if unavailable select beta).
- Put the device in bootloader / DFU mode (varies by chipset—see Flashing Guide).
- Connect USB, grant serial access when the browser asks, then run Flash.
Details, per-chip instructions, and errors: Flashing Guide and Troubleshooting.
Step 4 – If you flashed MeshCore™ or re-paired
- Power-cycle the device if the flasher does not reboot it automatically.
- Open the matching client: Meshtastic mobile app or MeshCore mobile app (Ripple).
- Pair and configure as in Step 2.
Step 5 – Verify the mesh
- Confirm your node appears in the app.
- With a second node on the same channel and key, confirm messages or telemetry flow.
- Walk through Troubleshooting if you see no RF activity or unstable links.
