Device Setup
LowMesh hardware ships with Meshtastic® firmware—you can follow this guide without flashing first. Use the Flashing Guide only if you updated firmware or switched to MeshCore™.
This page covers first boot, pairing with an app, basic identity, and initial mesh settings.
Prerequisites
- Device powered and booting (LED or screen behavior depends on model).
- The correct mobile app for what is on the radio: Meshtastic mobile app (default for LowMesh) or MeshCore mobile app (Ripple) if you flashed MeshCore™.
- Bluetooth enabled on the phone (typical path; some setups use USB or Wi-Fi).
- You know whether you run Meshtastic® or MeshCore™—settings names differ.
Step 1 – Power and first boot
- USB power or battery—follow your board’s safe voltage and polarity.
- Wait for stable boot (some boards show a splash screen or LED pattern).
- If the device was paired to an old phone, you may need factory reset or forget device in the OS Bluetooth settings—see Troubleshooting.
Step 2 – Pair with the app
Meshtastic® (typical)
- Open the Meshtastic® mobile app.
- Use scan or add device and select your node when it appears.
- Accept pairing prompts on phone and radio if required.
- When connected, open device settings to set region, owner name, and long/short name. Full UI tour: Meshtastic mobile app.
MeshCore™ / Ripple (typical)
- Open the Ripple app or web client (see MeshCore mobile app).
- Follow the project’s device pairing flow—some boards use companion vs GUI modes.
- Apply identity and network profile settings per MeshCore documentation.
Step 3 – Identity and labels
Set a clear node name and short name so others can recognize you on the mesh.
- Avoid personal data you do not want broadcast over the air.
- Remember: mesh traffic may be observable; use strong channel keys for private groups.
Step 4 – Region and RF compliance
Region (or equivalent) selects permitted bands and limits—must match your geography. Wrong region can be illegal or harmful to other users.
After region selection:
- Review TX power defaults (see Radio & mesh concepts).
- Confirm antenna is appropriate for the band and connector.
Step 5 – Channels and encryption
- Primary channel – shared name and pre-shared key (PSK) with your group.
- Secondary channels – optional; Meshtastic® supports multiple channels with different keys.
- MeshCore™ – follow the project’s room / profile model for shared keys.
Everyone who must talk together needs the same channel definition and key.
Step 6 – Verification checklist
- App shows connected and node info.
- Region matches your location.
- Channel name + PSK match your group’s settings.
- GPS (if used) has lock when testing position features.
- With a second node: send a test message or observe neighbor list.
If something fails
- Cannot pair: Bluetooth cache, distance, power, or firmware mismatch—see Troubleshooting.
- No other nodes seen: range, antenna, channel mismatch, or you are alone on the air—see Radio & mesh concepts.
- Wrong firmware family: reflash with the correct platform from Flashing Guide (recovery procedures in Troubleshooting).
